Four hospitals are featured, three of which remain: St Joseph’s Hospital, torn down in the late 1970’s; SW Washington Medical Center; Vancouver Memorial Hospital, and Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital. The upper border features the logos of SW Washington Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente and Legacy Health System. The portraits are of Henry Kaiser and Sidney Garfield. In 1938 Henry Kaiser joined Garfield and established a group-practice pre-payment plan that soon included the shipyard workers in Vancouver and San Francisco. In 1945 membership opened to community enrollment and by the 1950’s enrollment had surpassed 250,000 and reorganization created the framework and foundation for Kaiser Permanente’s present structure. By 1996, enrollment exceeded 7.4 million. |
