Trappers journey up from the river to the fort with their bales of beaver furs. Beaver was very plentiful in the northwest and their pelts were traded extensively. The most elegant top hats for men were made of felted North American beaver fur. Astoria, Oregon is named after John Jacob Astor, who built his fortune through the Pacific Fur Company. At the time of his death he was the wealthiest person in the U.S. |
