To celebrate statehood in 1889, Charles Talcott designed the state seal. Washington State’s official flag was adopted in 1923. This is the only US state flag that pictures a president and the only one with a green background. Washington was the 42th state in the USA. This panel also features our state bird, the gold finch; our state flower; the rhododendron and our state tree, the hemlock. The dragonfly is our state bug.
